Overview

Our College is an elite STEM college believed to be the highest performing school in the UK in Olympiad competitions, on a per head capita basis with students routinely take part in national and international competitions, where they achieve significant success.

Currently there are 110 students but plans to grow to around 150 over the course of the next couple of years. The college is setup to teach a sixth form curriculum, focusing exclusively on STEM subjects. The College operates across the 15–19 age range, and is fully co-educational.

The Role:

They are looking to appoint a dynamic Teacher of Mathematics to contribute to an outstanding department. All students at the College study A Level mathematics and about three-quarters also study A-level Further Mathematics. Mathematics is at the heart of the curriculum for their students, all of whom are intrinsically driven to learn mathematics for an array of reasons. Stretching students beyond the A-level curriculum is a core part of their mission.

All students are entered for various national and international competitions throughout the year, and calculations can be found scribbled around the building as students pose and solve problems on the whiteboards in the corridors. They have a strong history of Gold Awards in the UKMT Senior Challenge with a high proportion of applicants qualifying for BMO1 and beyond.

Teaching :

  • To teach and prepare students working at the highest academic levels, preparing them for A-level, Oxbridge and national and international competitions.
  • To teach groups as agreed with the Head of Mathematics and Assistant Principal (Academic)
  • To ensure that students are taught according to their individual needs and abilities, following the syllabus and programmes of study set by the College and the Department.
  • To employ teaching strategies that engender enthusiasm and raise the aspirations of all students. Student Learning
  • To be aware of the benchmark data that is available on each pupil taught.
  • To prepare pupils for public examinations and assessment and to comply with the College’s policy for marking pupils’ work and to keep a record of marks and grades awarded.
  • To keep a record of work covered by pupils.
  • To complete reports and records on students, including attending student/parents’ events.
  • To maintain high standards of engagement in the classroom so that there is an atmosphere conducive to work. Wider College Contribution

  • To contribute to the College’s STEM Communication programme
  • To take a full part in meetings for Departmental planning. • To take on the role of Tutor and attend College assemblies.

  • To contribute to departmental outreach and partnership work.
  • To contribute to the co-curricular and activities programme.
  • To support the boarding community.

College Week:

Teaching in the College takes place Monday to Friday during term-time between 08:30 and 16:00. Although staff are expected to contribute towards weekend and evening activities at points throughout the year. Lessons are 1 hour in length, and class sizes are 8-12 students

Academic Matters:

All full-time teachers will be in charge of a tutor group of around 8–12 students. Towards the end of each half-term a report or assessment is given to each student which will then be discussed in tutor groups. As well as teaching their own academic discipline, most teachers are timetabled to teach as part of the societies and activities programme.
